Caveat

This site is under construction, and as I'm often experimenting things may not always work properly...

Also, pages may not render completely as I intend with all possible browsers.

Let me explain. I try to write these pages — you can check yourself! — conform the HTML 4.01 standards. That is, everything should be more or less readable with any browser but it will only look nice with browsers that support cascading style sheets.

I have adopted this standard because HTML 4.0's principle of separating form and content appeals to me. But I'm aware that one cannot just decide upon such matters unilaterally. If YOUR browser does not adopt the standard WE have a problem. For example, arriving at this page you might discover that your favorite browser doesn't know about em-dashes (those dashes that are as long as the letter "m"). I will try to avoid those aspects of HTML 4.0 of which I know they are not generally supported, accepting that the "standard" of HTML 4.0 is not so standard as I would like. But what can I do to help it become the standard?

Even in a perfect world, the distinction between form and content may not always be that clear. Many advertisements (and too many websites) illustrate that much "content" is to be found in what is formally just "form". So here is the principle underlying this website:

The basic message should get across even using plain text-only browsers; supplementary information is coded for in the "form" layer.

Thus, to get all subtleties I intended, get a HTML 4.0 capable browser. That's the last word.
